Seven people have died after a five-storey paying guest accommodation collapsed in Delhi’s Satya Niketan area, raising serious questions over building safety, illegal construction, civic oversight and accountability. The tragedy, which struck a student-heavy locality near Delhi University’s South Campus, has triggered a major administrative and legal response.The building’s owner Hariram Gupta and his wife Urmila have been sent to 14 days of judicial custody, while their son Mahesh has been sent to two days of police custody as the investigation continues. Five senior MCD officials have also been suspended, including officials responsible for the South Zone and building enforcement.The Delhi High Court has sought accountability from the authorities and raised questions over whether there were lapses in permissions, inspections and enforcement.
